Repression of political aspirations

December 2003.
The longest trial in the history of the country is taking place before the Nouakchott Court of Criminal Appeal. Ould Haïdalla (former head of State and the main opponent of the outgoing President Maaouiva Ould Sid’Ahmed Taya in the presidential election of 7 November 2003) and his colleagues are arrested and accused of having attempted a coup d’Etat against the outgoing President.

Faced with the lack of evidence and the lack of transparency throughout the trial, ASF denounced the arbitrary nature of the arrests. The organisation instructs several Mauritanian and foreign lawyers to defend, and to secure the release of, Haïdalla and his colleagues.
